“Fanny packs” are in again, according to The Boston Globe

So yes, according to this article in The Boston Globe, “fanny packs” – as our American friends call them – are in again.

According to the writer, they’ve been spotted at The Lawn on D in Southie and MFA First Fridays. Gucci, Prada, and Louis Vuitton are in on the action, and that many celebrities have “bowed to the pack’s power” — Kim Kardashian West, Rihanna, Jaden Smith, NBA star Russell Westbrook, to name a few.

The writer sounded really pained to have to proclaim it, but I do empathise with her feeling of the typical fanny pack silhouette – bulge at groin – being innately cringeworthy.

Which is why, I hope, the hipi provides all the benefits of a waist/hip bag without the embarrassing aesthetic. Speaking of these benefits, the writer says: “… Such is the power of the fanny pack that soon enough (an interviewee’s husband), too, fell under its spell. “It meant he no longer had to hold his wife’s lip balm, and because always had her phone on her, she was easily reachable…”

I don’t empathise with the writer’s inference to the need to conform, however, because to me, a life being dictated by others on what works for you, is just no fun.

But hey, it doesn’t hurt to see there are other people out there who not only are confident enough to do their own thing, but also look pretty fly (love that word) while they’re at it.

Indeed, it’s a freedom to have one’s essentials at hand, and hopefully with the sleek hipi, one doesn’t have to examine one’s internal psychology too much in order to wear one.
